Turkey is renowned for its high
diversity of plants, with more than 8,650 species of higher plants
having been recorded to date, 30% of which are endemic. Baseline
surveys conducted as part of the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA)
identified 142 plant species along the pipeline route that were either
endemic or threatened. Accurate identification of these and other plant
species found along the pipeline route is a fundamental element of the
strategy to mitigate the effects of the project on the local ecology.
To assist in this process and to disseminate the wealth of information gathered during the EIA baseline surveys, BTC has, with the assistance of the Universities of Ege, Gazi and Istanbul and the consulting firm ENVY, developed the "Handbook of Threatened and Endemic Species of the BTC Pipeline". The handbook is organized by plant, Lot and ESA and on one page it is possible to determine:
