The first season’s field work is
now complete, with survey work in the autumn being particularly
successful. Spring surveys were hampered by a late start following bad
weather and difficult access conditions, and only twenty-one displaying
birds were located despite extensive coverage of the mountains in
northeast Turkey. By contrast, surveys for autumn flocks of birds
located a minimum of 56 birds and, encouragingly, found several
previously undocumented sites for the species. Through field work,
detailed habitat information has been collected which will be
invaluable for developing a computer model to predict the species’
distribution, and good contacts have been made with a wide range of
local individuals and organisations which will assist next year’s field
work.
Development of an eco-tourism plan demonstration for Ayder was also
delayed, but extensive socio-economic information has been collected
and is in the process of being analysed. It is hoped that a plan for
sustainable, environmentally friendly tourism can be introduced which
will bring tangible benefits both for local communities and wildlife.
