What is the Socio-Economic Background to Kayseri? Kayseri is the third largest pipeline province (974,000 inhabitants) with 64% of its population living in urban areas (the second most urbanised of the pipeline provinces). The average household size is six. Local residents in Kayseri are relatively wealthier than in other parts of Inner Anatolia, and local economies are based on agriculture and animal husbandry. Infrastructure is inadequate and the majority of local residents do not have adequate drinking water or sewerage systems. Literacy rates amongst surveyed respondents is quite high. Water shortages, which in some cases contribute to local conflicts, were rated as the predominant problem. Other significant problems raised by respondents were high agricultural input prices (eg for diesel oil, fertilizer), reduced agricultural profit, and that unemployment was particularly high amongst young adults. Source: EIA Household and Settlement Survey (2001) What are the overall CIP Programme aims? ![]() The overall objective of the CIP is to promote sustainable social and economic development of the people living within the 4 km corridor along the BTC Pipeline, which go beyond the simple mitigation of negative impacts caused by pipeline construction. The CIP, which intends to cover settlements and sections of the population experiencing greatest poverty, will give rural communities, support associations, co-operatives, and NGOs the skills to help themselves. The projects aim at improving social and economic capacity, income-earning and economic opportunities, improving the agricultural sector and increasing rural people’s problem-solving skills through training, and organization. A series of infrastructure improvements is also planned for schools, health facilities and water and sanitation facilities. Who will implement the project? The project will be implemented by PAR Consulting, a Turkish private development consultancy with substantial experience on similar projects funded by international institutions. Which groups of people will the project target? The project will target women, school and pre-school children, the unemployed, craftsmen, farmers, tradesmen and the uneducated. What geographical area will the project cover? The project activities will cover the 4 km corridor within the two provinces of Kayseri. The exact number of villages and people will be decided after initial visits and consultations. More disadvantaged communities will be given priority. What activities will the project include? Project activities planned within the extent of the project can be summarized under the following headings:Quick Impact Projects (Identification and implementation) Income Generating Activities
Creating awareness and ownership for the project objectives and results is critical in establishing long-term sustainability. Villagers’ activities will be gathered under both existing and new rural cooperatives to ensure that activities continue after the project’s completion. Projects involve a high level of cooperation between Government and communities, with an emphasis on the participation of all stakeholders. The obvious social and economic benefits arising from project activities, and the strengthening of local NGOs, will encourage all actors to ensure that the projects are sustained in the long term. Amount of Grant to be Provided for the Project US Dollar 849.335.- For further information: PAR: Bülent Özgun (Programme Director) or Tezcan Abay (Project Co-ordinator) E-Mail: This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it --- Tel: +90 (312) 284 8065 |
