Improvement of Potable Water Provision PDF Print E-mail
Wednesday, 04 April 2007
In July 2005 BTC/SCP initiated the assessment to determine the problems existing with potable water in communities on the eastern half of the pipeline. The assessment conducted by Umid HSSE identified 23 out of 50 with serious difficulties in terms of access to potable water. This program also included the development of a low-tech solution to help communities get one of life’s basic needs – clean water.

Upon completion of the assessment, BTC/SCP has provided some finance to install 6 water purification facilities in 6 communities along the BTC/SCP Pipelines.

The project envisages usage of ultra-violet bactericide units for disinfection of purified water. The unit consists of water purification ponds connected to the bactericide unit and a water tank. Disinfection process takes place while water crosses through the bactericide unit. Disinfected water then goes to the water tank and is being distributed as needed.

Success story

4th of July, 2006 has remained as the one of the most memorable dates in the history of the project, when an opening ceremony of the first Water Purification Facility in Gulabend village of Ujar district was conducted with participation of BP Community Investment Team representatives, Umid HSSE and local administration. The ceremony has set a green light to constant provision of high quality potable water to the village, which suffered till recently from absence of potable water. The population of 1200 people will benefit from the project. The quality of the water produced in the Water Purification Facility has been tested at MediClub laboratory and proved for being safe and meeting standards of potable water. It is designed that villagers will purchase potable water from newly established LLC at a low price. While enjoying a supply of clean and safe water, villagers will provide financial contribution into the local community fund. This is a new approach which allows ensuring a sustainability of the facility and sets an example of a multifunctional project with a long-term impact.
