In July and September of 2005 national Umid HSSC conducted an
assessment to determine the problems existing in potable water provision in the
communities along BTC/SCP Pipeline As part of the assessment, 23 communities on
the eastern half of the pipeline were identified out of 50 with serious
difficulties in terms of access to potable water. The assessment also included
the development of a low-tech solution to help communities get one of life’s
basic needs – clean water.
Upon completion of the assessment a grant was signed with Umid to install 6 water purification facilities in 6 communities along the BTC/SCP Pipelines. In addition to training that will help the community to develop and manage the facilities, the CIP team has asked Umid to help the communities create limited liability companies (LLCs). The LLCs will be owned by community members and will charge a fee for the purified water. Revenues from these fees will be used to: ensure the quality of the water through regular testing; pay the salaries of 2-3 permanent positions to run the facilities; maintain a fund for spare parts and maintenance of the facility. Any revenue left over will be made part of the villages’ community funds for future community development projects. |
