Save the Children
The programme implemented by Save the Children is focused on the 48 communities along the pipeline route between Yevlakh and the Georgian border in Yevlakh, Ganja, Goranboy, Samukh, Shamkir, Tovuz and Agstafa districts. The objective of the programme is to mobilize and empower communities to independently address their development needs. The total value of the programme is $1,500,000. The programme duration is 2 years. In implementation of this programme, Save the Children works with two local partners Umid and Agro-Information Centre (AIM).
The first step of the programme is to help mobilize communities into democratically-elected community-based organizations. Once the communities are mobilized, they are trained on how to assess their community's needs, how to prioritize community problems, and then how to design, implement, fund, and manage community projects. The national NGO Umid assists with the training of communities. This results in small social infrastructure improvement projects like drilling artesian wells, rehabilitating schools, creating community centres, cleaning irrigation canals, renovating roads, etc. These projects are designed and implemented by the communities who are required to raise 25% of the total micro-project cost (this is usually in-kind – labor, materials, land, etc.) and result in lasting, positive improvements in the lives of the community members. In addition, as part of the training, Save the Children helps communities to raise their own funds from among their own members to finance smaller projects supported by the community. The other local partner AIM helps communities to improve their agricultural production through the development of a network of agriculture extension agents who provide vital technical assistance to farmers. Save the Children, a US-based NGO, is a leading development and relief agency operating in over 45 countries. Save the Children has been operating in Azerbaijan since 1993. Its mission is to make lasting, positive change in the lives of children in need. To get an update on the programme please refer to the “Latest News” Section. |
